FUE Beard Transplant

Unlike scalp hair, which is subject to variable loss, beard hair remains stable over time. So a beard transplant procedure can be performed from the end of puberty, from age 18. At this age, the implantation is generally permanent.

The duration of a beard transplant depends on the number of grafts to be implanted, from 1.5 hours for filling in a scar to 7 hours for a full beard transplant.

The beard transplant procedure is performed entirely under local anesthesia. As early as the next day, you are physically fit to resume your activities. 

However, signs of the transplant remain visible for about 15 days. The donor area (at the back of the scalp) heals in about 7 days, and in the implanted beard area, the small scabs fall off within 15 days at the latest. The skin may remain slightly pink for a few more days.

In the days following a beard transplant, care must be taken not to dislodge grafts that haven’t yet "taken root." Any friction should therefore be avoided at night by sleeping on your back. However, since it isn’t always possible to control how you move during sleep, it’s best to sleep with a travel pillow for the first 7 days to keep your head upright while sleeping.

To shave the beard after a transplant, you need to wait 15 days for the scabs to fall off completely and for the skin to fully heal. Before that, you can trim the existing beard hair with scissors if it's too long.

After a beard transplant, some of the newly implanted hairs will fall out during the first two months, and regrowth occurs between the 3rd and 4th month.

At 6 months, results begin to show, with hair density and thickness increasing, but it takes a full year to achieve complete regrowth and optimal density.

The doctor will select grafts from the area of your scalp where hair has a lifespan of more than 80 years. So the implanted hair, the new hairs, will remain in place for the rest of your life.

There is no bandage on the face after a beard transplant. A simple bandage will cover the donor area on the scalp for 48 hours to promote healing and prevent staining your pillow.

The beard transplant is performed under local anesthesia. This local anesthesia is administered with small needles, slowly and precisely. Only these injections are uncomfortable. After that, the skin is numb and there is no more pain.

The consultation with the doctor will help identify any general contraindication to the transplant, such as a serious progressive illness (cancer, infection) or a treatment that contraindicates the procedure.

Locally, rather than contraindications, the doctor assesses the chances of a good result in line with the patient’s wishes. For example, an unstabilized patch of alopecia areata is a poor indication for a transplant. A donor area that is too small (Norwood 7 androgenetic alopecia) will not allow enough grafts to be harvested for a complete lack of beard.
